The Mode of Working of the Spirit of an unclean Demon

 GOSPEL THOUGHTS

22nd Week – Tuesday

Gospel – Luke 4: 31-37

The Mode of Working of the Spirit of an unclean Demon

1) It makes a person to cry with a loud voice

When a person cries or shouts with a loud voice

He/ She is not able to listen what others say

He/ She is not able to control his/her emotions. Emotional imbalance is seen at the highest level when one shouts or cries

He/ She is becomes very angry and there is a possibility of using all abusive words at others

There is also the possibility of doing physical at that moment

So when the spirit of an unclean demon makes one to shout means

It does not allow us to listen to the voice of God, voice of the conscience, and the voice of others who guide us in the right path

It also creates a lot of emotional imbalance within our life, which makes us to suffer a lot

It makes us to get angry and at times promotes to take revenge and do some physical harm.

This is how it works at the first level.

 2) It Questioned the divine relationship

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

It does not want to keep a relationship with  God. In other words it questions the divine relationship.

It works on the mode that, it has nothing to do with the divine

In our life to it gives us an impression that we can live without God, and we have nothing to do with God.

Such a tendency is growing very rapidly in today’s situation.

3) Destruction factor by the unclean Spirit

Have you come to destroy us?

It gives wrong information about the divine power

For the unclean spirit, Jesus is the destroyer

But the unclean spirit does not specify whether Jesus is the destroyer of Good or Evil

From the out word appearance, it gives an impression that Jesus is the destroyer

But we need to be very clear that Jesus destroys the Bad and brings up the Good.

4) The unclean Spirit is unable to hide the real identity of Jesus

“I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

In the battle of fighting against Jesus, the unclean spirit, finally reveals the real identity of Jesus *The holy one of God*

Even the unclean spirit cannot hide the real identity of Jesus, even though it wants to hide

The unclean spirit of the demon, finally has to confess the name of Jesus, which makes the demon to lose its power.

5) The confession of Jesus name makes the demon to lose its power

The moment the evil spirit confessed that Jesus is the *Holy one of God* it could not speak further

It lost its power and came out without doing any harm

It could not stand before Jesus after confessing His name. So it had to throw itself down before Jesus and before the crowd

It lost it power even to stand before Jesus, so it had to run from the presence of Jesus

Throwing Down is the total surrender to the power of Jesus. The demon could but had to humble itself before Jesus, by throwing itself down. That is how it was made powerless and useless.

The moment the unclean spirit of the demon pronounced the name *Jesus* and it confessed the real identity of Jesus *The Holy one of God* the unclean spirit completely lost its power, control and the trick. With that it was defeated and made to run away from the presence of Jesus.

6) The power of the name of Jesus in my life

The above episode clearly shows us the power of Jesus' name.

What about my experience with regard to Jesus' name

Have I experienced the power of Jesus' name in my life?

The name of Jesus is the powerful weapon against the devil. We need to use it.

“Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk” and the man simply walked  Acts 3:1-8

7) The various aspects of the Spirit of an unclean demon in my life

All of us have some effects of the spirit of an unclean demon in our life. The following may be some of the examples

  • Jealousy
  • Division
  • Revenge
  • Pride
  • Gossip
  • Cheating
  • Non cooperation
  • Pleasure
  • Envy
  • Anger
  • Un-forgiveness
  • Laziness
  • Self-righteousness
  • Arrogance
  • Rigidity
  • Narrow mindedness

Which are the aspects affecting my life?

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones.

Roots of our Spirituality is found in our Native Place

 GOSPEL THOUGHTS

22nd Week – Monday

Gospel – Luke 4: 16-30

Roots of our Spirituality is found in our Native Place

1) Native place is the beginning of our Spirituality.

Where did we learn first to pray? Where did we see for the first time a sacred place meant for worship? Where did we get the chance to know about Jesus and other spiritual things? The One word answer would be "Our Native Place"

So in our Spiritual life native place has a strong influence and it is the foundation of our spiritual life.

In our life the Native place has a first place for everything. In fact it decides everything in our life. So also it has a strong connection to our spiritual life

2) What do we understand by native Place?

This Native place includes many areas.

Our own house and our family members, especially our parents and siblings

A beautiful altar in our house, where we gathered to pray

A neighborhood house where we went for prayer and saw how people prayed together

Our Church, where we had been taken by our parents to baptize by which we became the children of God and the faith life began in an official way

Our School where we were taught the importance of Prayer and other basic catechism

In this sense the native place is a wide concept and it has a great relevance and influence on our spiritual life.

3) Nazareth was Jesus’ surname: Native place is our second Name or Surname

His native place was Nazareth, where he had grown up. Coming to native place always makes us joyful and it takes us to our childhood memories.

Jesus gets the name ‘Nazareth’ from this place. Jesus of Nazareth is well known phrase which speaks about the importance of the Native place of Jesus

The very fact that Nazareth is mentioned in the Name of Jesus, it shows the importance of the native place in the life of the person

4) Respect for the Customs of the native Place

After coming to his native place he respects the custom of the place; that is, he goes to the synagogue on the Sabbath day

Thus He respects the custom of his native place

Respecting the customs of the place shows the Humility of Jesus. Sometimes when some people become great in their life they forget the custom of the Native Place. At times they feel that those customs of their native place are unreasonable and silly. But Jesus never felt that the customs of the Native place are silly or unreasonable.

When people forget to respect the customs of the native place it also shows that they have lost the humility in their lives. Such a kind of pride is not good.

5) Spending time in the Synagogue

He spends time in synagogue in praying and reading the word of God.

Respecting the custom of native place with regard to the spiritual life is very important. Jesus gave importance to those things.

He learnt this beautiful custom of praying in the synagogue from his native place.

Most of our customs with regard to our spiritual life, we have learnt from our native place. Are we ashamed of practicing such beautiful customs when we grow and migrate to other places?

When we go to our native place it is better to visit the church or the sacred place where we learnt to pray and when we grow in our spiritual life.

6) My Native place and the customs about the Spiritual life

What is the custom of my family or my native place with regards to the spiritual things?

We have learnt the beautiful custom of praying from our family. Let us respect this custom wherever we are and whatever we become in our life.

We have learnt the Beautiful custom of asking blessings from our parents after the prayer and also from religious people. They gave us God's blessing. Do I respect this custom today in my life? Or do I feel ashamed of ask blessings from the elders?

We have learnt to kiss the altar and holy images with reverence from our house when we were small. What about today? Do I feel the need of it?

We have learnt the beautiful custom of reading the word of God and respecting the Holy Bible from our house or from our native Church. What about Today?

Let us respect these beautiful customs of our native places which we learnt from our parents and teachers when we were small.

7) What I am today is the result of My Native Place

One can't undermine the importance of once native place and the good values which were learnt from our families.

What we are today is the result of our family and the native place.

In our greatness the native place always takes first place. We need to remember this fact.

When we become great; people will always make a reference to our native place.  So it shows the importance of the Native place.

Let's remember this and let's respect some of the important customs of our native places which help us to live a good and holy life.

Let us remember that we should never bring a bad name or disgrace to our native place by our wicked things. Always bring glory to the native place.

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones.

No Handle for the Cross : The Style of Taking up ones Cross

 GOSPEL THOUGHTS

22nd Week – Sunday

Gospel – Matthew 16: 21-27

The Style of Taking up ones Cross

Take up your Cross and Follow me

1) The angle of Taking up ones Cross

Whenever we think about Jesus taking up his cross we get the picture of jesus carrying Cross on the Shoulders.

The Way of the Cross is one of the best examples to get this image.

Whenever Jesus says take up your Cross the same image comes to our mind.

So this image has a powerful meaning and it is very important image for our life.

2) Shoulder: The best place to carry the Cross

Cross is made in such  a way that it fits well to the Shoulders. The place in between the two beams will fit to the shoulders. So carrying cross becomes possible even if it is very heavy

In other words Shoulder is the proper place to carry the Cross.

3) Giving Shoulder has a deeper meaning

One of the meanings that we get from this image is the Willingness to carry the cross

When someone gives shoulder means it is not out of compulsion but the person voluntarily offers his help to others or voluntarily accepts the challenge to carry the Cross.

When something is given to carry on the head it appears as if he is punished for something

Carrying something on the head always has different meaning than carrying something on the Shoulder.

Jesus never carried his criss cross on the head, but always on the Shoulder

So Jesus never considered carrying cross as a punishment but carried cross on the Shoulder to show that he is voluntarily accepting the Cross, or he is offering his shoulders willingly to carry the burden of the cross.

4) Do not carry your Cross on the Head but carry on the Shoulder

Carrying cross on the head may over power your whole being

It may not allow you to come up from your challenges

Symbolically we can say when the Cross/Challenges goes over the head, it is difficult to carry its weight and we may give up. Sometimes we may not be able to carry the burden

Head is not the place of the Cross. So don't carry your cross on the head.

Giving Shoulder shows that one is  equally involving in the process of carrying the Cross.

5) No handle for the Cross to carry it in a simple way

  • Bags have handles
  • Suitcases have handles
  • Plastics have handles
  • Doors have handles
  • Drawers have handles

These few above examples show us that, many of the things we use in our day today life have handles

All those things which have handles either they are carried in our hands by hanging or they are pulled with their hands to carry from one place to the another

Cross does not have a handle

Modern crosses have only hooks which are using for hanging and not for carrying

So its meaning is very clear

Cross can't be carried like a bag, like hanging in our hands

Cross can't be pulled like the cart. Carts have handles which are used for pulling or for pushing

6) All those things which have handles can be opened or moved

Bags have handles, and bags can be opened

Suitcases have handles and suitcases are opened

Drawers have handles and they are used to open

Carts have handles which are used to pull or push

In this Context Cross do not have handle.

It means it can't be open. In other words there nothing to open in Cross. It is already open. Cross shows itself to the entire world. It is wide open.

Cross do not have handle, so it can't be pulled and pushed, meaning to say Cross is not meant for pushing or pulling. It is meant for carrying on the Shoulder

7) What is my Style of carrying the Cross?

Is it the style of Jesus? Where I carry the Cross on the Shoulders

Is it the style of Peter, who wanted to avoid totally the cross?

Is the Style of Pharisees and Scribes, who were trying to push the cross on somebody else?

Am I following the style of carrying the cross on the head?

Am I trying to fix some handles to the Cross and want to hang it in my hands?

What is my Style?

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones.

Evil effects of the Grudge

Gospel Thoughts

21st  Week : Saturday

GOSPEL Mark - 6: 17- 29

Memory of St John the Baptist

The Evil effects of the Grudge

Herodias had a grudge against Him

1) The danger of Grudge

Grudge is one of the powerful emotions of human being.

All human beings suffer from this emotion. Some control it, others become victim of it, and still others use this emotions to take revenge against another.

If this emotion is not controlled in a proper way, it can destroy everyones life.

Heroduas' life is one of the best examples for this.

2) Wicked people keep grudge

Herodias is one of the wicked persons of the human History

Her wickedness is seen in her way of life. She lived a immoral life and had extra marital relationship with others

She was not ready to change her immoral way of life when it was pointed out by John the Baptist.

Instead of changing her life, she became furious and wanted to kill John the Baptist. This is the hight of her wickedness.

3) The Grudge of Herodias Killed a innocent Man

It was the grudge of Herodias which led John the Baptist's murder

A innocent man was put in prison and he was made to suffer there, for no fault of his.

The Grudge of Herodias was so strong, She could not see a holy man, she could not see truth, she could not see what was morally good and wrong, she was not ready to listen to Him. Finally the same grudge results in the death of a Holy and innocent man.

4) The grudge of Herodias put the king into shameful situation

When Salome came and dance he was very happy. Without thinking much he promised to the girl whatever she wanted.

When she went to her mother and discussed about the same, she asked for the head of John the Baptist.

It was a unexpected thing for the king to give such a strange gift

The king was sad and he was put to shame, by asking such a strange thing in front of the guest

5) The Grudge of Herodias took away the joy and happiness

All were enjoying at the party. They were fully prepared for the celebration.

All were enjoying at the party. But suddenly when the girl asked for the head of John the Baptist, the mood of the celebration changed

There was total silence and a kind of sadness

The whole celebration went flat, and no one could enjoy the sweetness of celebrate.

This is the result of Herodias' grudge.

6) Heroduas' Grudge put the king into difficulty

The king had to face a tough and humiliating situation because of Herodias' grudge.

He was put in difficult when they asked for his head.

Since Herod feared about John the Baptist and since he had known that he was a prophet, killing him was not an easy thing.

So he was not only put in difficult situation, but he also had to chose between prophet and his foolish promise.

Because of the grudge of the herodias, the King became Victim to his own foolish ideas.

7) The grudge of Herodias led her to use her daughter for sensual pleasure

A mother is using her daughter for sensual pleasure. This is the wickedness of the grudge.

She also became the murderer of John the Baptist because of her mothers grudge.

Herodias' grudge did not spare her child to live a decent life.

Her grudge was so strong, she was even to use her own daughter for such a nasty thing.

8) Her grudge destroyed everything

  • It destroyed a saintly man

  • It destroyed her family life

  • It destroyed her daughter

  • It destroyed her good image

  • It destroyed her moral life

  • It destroyed, finally everything. This is the result of the Grudge.

Do I want to keep grudge? Just think about it

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones

Soul is the Lamp of our life

 GOSPEL THOUGHTS

21st Week – Friday

Gospel – Matthew 25: 1-13

St Augustine - Saint of the Day

Soul is the Lamp of our life

1) Lamp is the identity of Light

Wherever there is lamp there should be light. Usually they go together.

Without light life is impossible. Light is very much necessary for all forms of being

Even the plants need light for its growth. Without light there is no growth.

2) Lamp and light are the two sides of the same coin

The purpose of the lamp is to produce light. Therefore lamp and light are inseparable things. They always represent together.

Whenever a lamp ceases to produce light, it no more remains as lamp. Such lamps are thrown out and no one bothers about such lamps

They are good only to keep in museum.

3) Lamp always needs some energy to produce light

Lamp is unable to produce light without the energy.

Today we have electricity which is used as energy to  produce light

During the time of Jesus lamps were lit through the energy of oil.

Oil was used in the lamps to produce light.

4) Jesus uses the three things in today's Gospel Reading - Lamp, Oil and Light

Lamp, Oil and Light - This is a perfect combination. This combination is very much necessary to get the final results

If any one of the above things are missed the desired result will not come, and the whole purpose is defeated.

Lamp heavily depends on oil and light also depends on oil and the lamp.

5) One who maintains the perfect combination is a wise person

The Gospel of the day makes a distinction between wise virgins and foolish virgins

The differentiating aspect is very simple.

Those who maintained a perfect balance between the *Lamp, Oil and Light* were called as wise virgins

Those who failed to see the connection and perfect balance between Lamp, Oil and the Light were called foolish virgins

6) Our Soul is the Lamp of our body

Since our souls are the lamps of our body, body depends on the soul for the light.

Without the light the body can't function. And our body needs a special light, which is called divine light.

Soul has a special capacity to shed the divine light on the body, which makes us to live our life in a meaningful way.

In order to shed the divine light by the soul we need to fill this soul with special oil.

By our good deeds we can fill our souls with pure oil which will help the soul (Lamp) to brighten its light on the body.

7) Soul / Lamp is a great gift from God

All of us are given this lamp. We need to thank God for the same

God has filled this lamp with oil of grace at the time of Baptism, which makes us to see and understand what the Christian life is.

At the same time God also gives us the special responsibility to refill this lamp with pure oil through our good way of life. Only then this lamp will shine

8) What type of Oil I am filling the the Lamp/Soul

If I fill the pure oil through the good deeds, this lamp will burn with bright light

If I fill this lamp with lower quality of oil, through my mischievous way of life,  the light may be clear or it may go off at any time.

If I fail to fill this lamp, there will not be any light in my life, and my life will have only darkness, which will make my life miserable.

So what type of oil do I want to fill?

Am I wise servant who fills the lamp with oil?

Am I a foolish servant who takes only the lamp without filling the oil and then I suffer in darkness?

Think about it

9) St Augustine - Saint of the Day

Bishop confessor, Father and Doctor of the Church (354- 430)

Born on 13 November 354, Augustine was 42 when he was made Bishop of Hippo

He died of a fever on 28 August 430

“God usually deserts the negligent - kills the errors, yes but loves the erring”

“Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in You.”

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones.

The beauty of life is hidden in Unexpected Things

Gospel Thoughts
21st Week : Thursday

GOSPEL Matthew - 23: 42- 51

St Monica - Saint of the Day

The beauty of life is hidden in unexpected things

You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.

1) In unexpected things there is suspense

Unexpected things always create a kind of suspense, uncertainty and a kind of uneasy feeling

This suspense or uncertainty leads us to become alert or to watchful about something.

Ultimately this unexpected things makes us the prepare ourselves to any kinds casualties in life.

2) There is no suspense in expected things

When everything becomes very clear to us or if we know the result before it comes, there isn't any suspense about a particular thing.

When we are certain about something we tend to take things lightly and we don't pay much attention to the same

When things become normal the quality of alertness, watchfulness and preparedness becomes very low and they do not influence our life in any way.

3) Unexpected things change our life

Changes in life happen only because of the experienced things

When something unexpected things happen they very much influence our life either in a positive way or in a negative way. In either case it brings a lot of change in our life

Such unexpected things are necessary to learn many new things in life.

4) Life is full of unexpected things

There is nothing certain in life

Tomorrow is uncertain

Unexpected things happen about our  health, now and then

Death is uncertain and it comes in an unexpected hour

Crisis in life comes in an unexpected hour

Accidents happen in life in an unexpected hour

Changes in our perception and in our thinking, understanding happen in an unexpected hour

Thieves come to our house in an unexpected hour

Anything that happens in life is unexpected. So we need to be prepared for the same.

5) The tragedy of life - we crave for expected things but life gives unexpected things

We want to be systematic in everything.

We want to know everything that happens in our life

Precision is the norm of life. This is the human nature.

Even we want to know exactly when the life beings and when the life ends

But life has shown us that nothing is certain and things happen in an unexpected hour

Unexpectedness is at the center of our life, which we can't change

6) One who prepares himself for unexpected things is a wise in the sight of God

One who prepares himself for unexpected things is really a wise man

The benefits of preparing for unexpected things

He can handle the situation in a better way

It does not make the person to suffer heavily

The person is able to manage any situation

He is able to get the best out the unexpected things

He becomes vigilant and alert about everything in life

He is able to grow in life in a better way

7) Christian spirituality is all about unexpected things

Most of the spiritual exercises we do in order to prepare ourselves for the unexpected things

For example: Death, Sickness, problems, crisis in life, failures in life

All the above mentioned things  are unexpected issues which happen in our lives. Such unexpected things need a lot of preparation, which our spirituality helps us to do

8) Lack of unexpected makes our life miserable

Those who are not ready to face unexpected things in life their life becomes miserable.

Since life is full of unexpected thing one should prepare himself for the unexpected things in order to face them in a challenging way

9) COVID19 is one of the most unexpected things in the recent history of human life

No one was prepared for COVID19. As a result we know the havoc it has created in all circles of life: economic life, political life, community life, spiritual life etc

This is one of the best example of our time to understand the seriousness of unexpected things in life and the preparation which is needed for such things

10) Death is the most unexpected thing in everyone's life

Death is certain, but no one knows when it comes

It is the most unexpected thing in life.

One has to prepare for such unexpected thing in life at any moment of life.

Am I ready to this unexpected thing in my life?

Death will not ask us whether we are ready or not? It will simply grab our life when its time comes?

Am I ready to face the unexpected time of the death?

Am I ready to face the unexpected time of the arrival of the Lord

Am I ready to face the unexpected crisis in my Life?

Think about it?

11) St Monica - Person of deep Faith

She prayed 18 years for the conversion of her husband

She prayed another 15 years for the conversion of her Son Augustine

"It is impossible that the son of such tears should perish"

My son, I had but  one object in life and that was to see you a Catholic

Bury my body where you will. All I ask is that you remember me always at the Altar of God

Never can I describe what her love was for me! By her glance as well as her words she raised our hearts to God. If I am your Child, Oh my God, it is because you did give me such a Mother - St Augustine

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your  ones

Am I following the Tomb Spirituality?

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

21st Week – Wednesday

Gospel – Matthew 23: 27-32

Am I following the Tomb Spirituality?

You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth

1) Tombs are the place which are used to bury the dead things

Tombs are found in the cemetery.

First of all tombs are used to bury the things

Something which is buried will not come up

That is the end point of something. Burial is the final thing that happens to a material things, which shows the end of the existence of particular thing

Secondly tomb is used to bury the dead thing and not the living things

Living things cannot be buried. Only the dead things are buried.

So tomb is a place of dead things and not the living things.

2) Something which is put in the tomb gradually decays

Anything that is put in the tomb decomposes itself and gets rotten within no time.

Once it gets rotten, one can find only bad smell, stinking sensation, filth,  dry bones, nauseating feeling and sad feelings

So it is a place of rotten things which no one wants to see or experience.

Usually people run away from such a situation

3) Tomb creates a kind of fear and anxiety in us

Usually for us tomb is a place of fear. This may be because of our wrong perception about dead people and place of burial.

Even then psychologically tomb automatically creates a uneasy feeling and fear with in us

The fear and anxiety is because of the nature of the tomb. The nature of the tomb is decay, place of burial, bad smell and other various things

Some people even during the day time are scared to visit the tomb and to remain there for a moment

4) Inside scene of the tomb is very scary

First of all tomb is deep and it creates a kind of drakness within the tomb

Secondly inside the tomb we see bones and specially the skeleton.

To see such things inside the tomb is not very easy. Many of us do not want to see the inside scene of the tomb, because it is very scary and frightening.

5) In order to hide the rotten things, tombs are covered and times they are beautified

The purpose of burial is to hide the bad things. There is no other possibility with the dead things

We have to bury so that they are hid under the mud so that, bad things may not appear in the public.

Tombs are beautified in order to change the impression of the tomb. Out worldly one can try to change the appearances of the tomb, but the reality remains the same.

External beautification does not change the internal reality. This is the fact

6) Life is not to be considered as Beatified tomb

Jesus says about scribes and Pharisees and their life is like a whitewashed tombs

It is very clear that externally they appear beautiful but from inside full of bad things.

Therefore one should not allow his life to become a external beautified tomb

7) Life is not a tomb to bury bad and rotting things

Many people bury bad and rotting things in their life as if their life is equal to tomb which is used for burying dead things

In our life these things represent as bad or dead things

  • Jealousy,
  • Revenge
  • Pride
  • Arrogance
  • Enmity
  • Gossip
  • Un-forgiveness
  • Indifference
  • Individualism
  • Materialism
  • Gluttony
  • Sensual Pleasures

When a person fills his life with these stinking things, life becomes a tomb. Such tombs are in however way one beautifies it is useless. Inside reality can't be changed?

8) Tomb comes after our death, not before

To a person’s life tomb has reference only after the death of the person

When a person is living no one takes about tomb for the person who is still living

Even then a living persons can become life a tomb. That is the tragedy of his life.

When the living things such as hope, love, forgiveness and values are dead a persons life becomes like a tomb which is meant for dead things

So when you are still living do not allow your life to become like a tomb.

9) What about my life?

  • Is it a scary tomb?
  • Is it a abandoned tomb?
  • Is it a beautified tomb?
  • Is it equal to a living tomb?
  • Is it like a open tomb from where the foul smell comes out?

10) Life: is it a place of burial or planting

  • One can use one’s life to burry bad things
  • Or one can plant or sow the seeds of good things.
  • Think about it

God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones.

The Spirituality of the Yoke

GOSPEL THOUGHTS *Ordinary Season:  Fifteenth Week :  Thursday* *Gospel : Mt 11:28* *First Reading : Ex 3:13-20* *Responsorial Psalm : 105:1 ...
