The Question of Right hand and Left hand while giving alms

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Ordinary Season:  Eleventh Week :  Wednesday*

*Gospel : Mt 6:1-6, 16-18*

*First Reading : 2 Cor 9:6-11*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 112:1bc-2, 3-4, 9*

*The Question of Right hand and Left hand while giving alms*

*1) The Symbolism: Right Hand and Left Hand*

*Right hand* : In biblical symbolism, the right hand often represents strength, honor, or righteous actions.

For example, Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19).

*Left hand* : While not always negative, the left hand can symbolize what is less important, or in this case, the inner part of ourselves that may seek recognition or reward.

*2) Spiritual Meaning of the Phrase*

Jesus is using figurative language. The point is not about the literal hands, but about radical humility and inner purity in our good deeds.

*A) Avoiding Self-Glorification*

We are warned not to do good works to be seen by others (Matthew 6:1).

Even within ourselves, we must avoid self-congratulation or pride.

Example: A person may help the poor, but then boast internally — Jesus says even that kind of inner praise spoils the gift.

*B) Total Secrecy in Generosity*

The image of one hand not knowing what the other is doing calls us to a level of secrecy and sincerity that excludes even self-centered thoughts.

The focus must be on God, not on ourselves or human praise.

*C) God Sees the Heart*

The key teaching: “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

It’s a call to trust in God’s approval, not public recognition.

*3) Practical and Spiritual Teachings*

*Give silently and joyfully,* expecting nothing in return—not even internal pride.

Do not keep a *“record”* of your good works—God already knows.

Beware of spiritual pride; sometimes our greatest temptation is not doing wrong, but taking too much credit for doing right.

Let your right hand act, but keep your left hand — your ego, your self-focus — out of it.

*4) Biblical Reflections*

According to Old Testament: Giving to the poor is a sacred act—done for God, not human reward.

*Heavenly Reward* Jesus contrasts earthly praise with the reward from the Father.

Public approval is temporary. But secret charity builds up eternal treasure (Matthew 6:20).

Imitating God’s Hidden Generosity : God’s providence often works silently and invisibly.

We are invited to mirror God's quiet care, like rain falling without announcement (Matthew 5:45).

*Think about it*

*God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones*
