Parallel between Adam and Christ, and the imagery of the rib

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Lenten Season: Holy Week : Holy Saturday*

*Gospel : Luke 24:1-12*

*First Reading : Rom 6:3-11*

*Responsorial Psalm : 118*

*Parallel between Adam and Christ, and the imagery of the rib*

*1) Eve from Adam's side: Genesis 2:21-22*

*So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man... and he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man."*

Eve was formed from Adam's side—not his head to rule over him, nor his feet to be trampled on, but from his side to be his equal, close to his heart.

The deep sleep of Adam is symbolic—it prefigures the "sleep" of Christ in death.

*2) The Church from Christ’s side* John 19:34

*"But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water."*

From the side of Christ on the Cross flowed blood and water—interpreted by Church Fathers as signs of the Eucharist (blood) and Baptism (water).

These sacraments are the very foundations of the Church.

Thus, just as Eve came from Adam's side, the Church is born from Christ's pierced side.

*3) Christ as the New Adam*

Paul calls Jesus the *last Adam* who brings life where the first Adam brought death.

The *bride* of the New Adam is the Church (Revelation 21:2), who is made holy through His sacrifice.

*4) The Bride of Christ*

*Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her*

Christ's self-giving love, unto death, brings forth a holy bride—the Church, just as Adam’s body was opened for Eve.

*5) Typology and Fulfillment*

Adam and Eve are a type (symbol) of Christ and the Church.

The rib speaks of intimacy, sacrifice, and union.

The first bride was made from the body of the first man; the eternal bride was born from the body of the Son of Man.
