Three excuses to the Banquet

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Ordinary Season:  Thirty First Week : Tuesday*

*Gospel :  Luke 14:15-24*

*First Reading : Rom 12:5-16*

*Responsorial Psalm : 131:1-3*

*Three excuses to the Banquet*

*1) Three Excuses*

“I have bought a field and must go and see it.”

“I have bought five yoke of oxen and am on my way to try them out.”

“I have just married a wife, so I cannot come.”

*2) The Field — Attachment to Property*

“I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it.”

*Literal meaning*: The man prioritizes his land and possessions over the invitation.

*Spiritual meaning*: The love of material possessions—land, property, wealth—can make the heart closed to God’s call.

*Symbolism*: Represents people whose hearts are absorbed in worldly gain. They are so busy securing their future on earth that they miss the banquet of eternal joy.

*Lesson*: The kingdom of God cannot be entered by those bound by greed or ownership; it belongs to those who are free enough to leave everything to follow the Lord.

*3) The Oxen — Attachment to Work and Ambition*

“I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them.”

*Literal meaning*: Business or professional concerns prevent attendance.

*Spiritual meaning*: The obsession with work, success, and productivity replaces the desire for communion with God.

*Symbolism*: Represents those absorbed in human projects, achievements, or self-reliance, who feel no need for grace or invitation.

*Lesson*: God’s kingdom is not earned by human effort. It’s a gift received in humility, not through busyness or career-driven hearts.

*4) The Marriage — Attachment to Pleasure and Relationships*

“I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.”

*Literal meaning*: Family or personal relationships take priority.

*Spiritual meaning*: Represents the attachment to comfort, pleasure, or human affections that keep one from total surrender to God.

*Symbolism*: These are people whose emotional attachments or pleasures are stronger than their desire to be with God.

*Lesson*: Even good things—love, marriage, friendship—can become idols when they take God’s place at the center.

*5) Deeper Significance*

*The excuses are not “evil” things*—land, work, and marriage are good gifts from God. The danger lies in letting the good become the enemy of the best.

*They represent the three great distractions:*

Possessions (wealth and property)

Profession (work and achievement)

Pleasure (comfort and relationships)

These echo the “three temptations” in 1 John 2:16: “The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.”

*The universal invitation:* When the first guests reject the invitation, the master invites the poor, crippled, blind, and lame—symbolizing that the kingdom is open to all, especially those humble enough to receive it.

*The banquet = the Kingdom of God* The dinner represents the joy of salvation, Eucharistic fellowship, and final heavenly union with God.

*Think about it*

*God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your ones*
