GOSPEL THOUGHTS
*Ordinary Season : Eighteenth Week: Friday*
*Gospel : Mt 16: 24-28*
*First Reading : Nahum 1:15; 2:2; 3:1-3, 6-7*

*The Exchange Offer for the Soul*
*1) The World Offers Many “Exchange Deals”*
Every day, the world seems to tell us:
“Give your time, and I will give you money.”
“Give your honesty, and you can gain success.”
“Give your principles, and you can gain popularity.”
“Give your peace, and you can gain possessions.”
“Give your family time, and you can gain a bigger career.”
“Give your conscience, and you can gain power.”
These may look like attractive offers, but Jesus asks: “What are you losing in the exchange?” Sometimes we gain something outside but lose something inside.
*2) There Is No Genuine Exchange for the Soul*
Jesus asks: “What can anyone give in return for his soul?” The answer is: *Nothing*.
Your soul is more valuable than money, property, fame, position or success. Once something precious is lost, no amount of worldly wealth can purchase it back.
A person may say, “I have everything.” But Jesus asks, “Do you still have yourself?”
*3) The Greatest Danger: A Profitable Loss*
There is a strange kind of loss in life: we can become successful and still become losers.
A person may gain:
More money → less peace
More fame → less privacy
More power → less humility
More possessions → less contentment
More achievements → less family time
More followers → less authenticity
From the world's perspective, these may look like gains.
From Jesus' perspective, if we lose our soul in the process, they become losses.
*4) “Deny Yourself, Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me”*
Jesus gives us the alternative to the world's exchange offer:
Deny yourself → Take up your cross → Follow Jesus.
This does not mean hating ourselves or rejecting legitimate happiness. It means saying:
“I will not sacrifice my values for success.”
“I will not sacrifice my family for possessions.”
“I will not sacrifice my conscience for profit.”
“I will not sacrifice my faith for popularity.”
Following Jesus means knowing what is non-negotiable in life.
*5) The World Says: “Gain More.” Jesus Says: “Become More.”*
The world measures life by what we have. Jesus measures life by what we become.
The world asks: “How much do you possess?”
Jesus asks: “How much love do you possess?”
The world asks: “How successful are you?”
Jesus asks: “How faithful are you?”
The world asks: “How many people know you?”
Jesus asks: “Do you know God?”
*6) The Real Exchange Offer of Jesus*
Interestingly, Jesus also gives us an exchange—but it is completely different.
He invites us to exchange:
Sin → Grace
Pride → Humility
Hatred → Forgiveness
Fear → Faith
Selfishness → Love
Earthly attachment → Eternal life
Our cross → His companionship
And Jesus does not ask us to give something without giving something greater. He gives Himself.
*7) A Question for Our Life*
Before making an important decision, we can ask ourselves:
“What am I gaining, and what am I losing?”
Not only: “Will this make me successful?” But: “Will this make me a better person?”
Not only: “Will this increase my income?” But: “Will this decrease my peace?”
Not only: “Will people admire me?” But: “Will God be pleased with me?”
The world may offer us everything in exchange for our soul. Jesus offers us nothing less than Himself in exchange for our whole life. And that is the only exchange worth making.
