The process of encounter with Jesus

GOSPEL THOUGHTS*

*Christmas Season: January 4th*

*Gospel : Jn 1:35-42*

*First Reading : 1 Jn 3:7-10*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 98:1, 7-8, 9*

*The process of encounter with Jesus*

*1) The Need of a Guide*

In the process of encountering Jesus we need a proper guide and guidance

John the Baptist was a perfect guide to lead his disciples in right path, which ultimately resulted in encountering Jesus by two apostles

This particular incident highlights the importance of a guide in our spiritual journey to encounter Jesus

*2) The Need of interest : Be a Seeker*

One who wishes have an deep encounter with Jesus needs to have a genuine interest, to meet Jesus

The two disciples of John the  Baptist, had genuine desire to meet Jesus

So, as soon as their teacher guided them in the right path, they went in serach of the Messiah

Genuine interest makes our search successful

*3) The need to spend time with Messiah*

In the process of encountering Jesus, it is very important to stay with Jesus

When the two disciples came to meet Jesus, He invited them to stay with Him

In turn the two disciples stayed with the Lord, which made them to encounter the Lord in a deeper way

Spending time with the Lord, is the key to encounter or experience Jesus

*4) The need of Experiencing Messiah*

The two disciples of Jesus experienced Jesus in most personal way

Since they stayed with the Lord, they were able to experience him in a deeper way

The primary purpose of our life is to experience Jesus in a personal way

This Gospel incident gives us the insight into how one can personally experience Jesus in ones life

*5) The need of Proclamation*

Proclamation is the central point of encountering Jesus

The two disciples after having met Jesus went back to share the divine experience with others

One can't keep quiet once one experiences Jesus in his/her life

Proclamation is the part of our mission

*6) The need of leading others to Messiah*

Andrew was one among two disciples of John who fallowed Jesus

Andrew was the Brother of Peter

Once, Andrew had very personal experience of Jesus, He went and shared with Peter.

Andrew was able to bring his bother Peter to Jesus whom He called *Cephas*, which means *Rock*

Am I able to lead others to Jesus?

Importance of Spirit descending and remaining with Jesus

*GOSPEL THOUGHTS*

*Christmas Season: 3rd January*

*Gospel : Jn 1:29-34*

*First Reading : 1 John 2:29–3:6*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 98:1, 3cd-4, 5-6*

*Importance of Spirit descending and remaining with Jesus*

*1) The Symbolism of the Dove*

In biblical imagery, the dove often symbolizes peace, purity, and the presence of God.

In Genesis 8:11, a dove with an olive branch signifies peace after the flood. Here, the dove represents the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus, affirming His identity as the Messiah and God's chosen one.

The world expected a militant savior, who would conquer the world, not through humility, compassion, and divine love but with power and authority

*2) The Spirit Remaining on Jesus*

Unlike the temporary empowering of prophets or kings in the Old Testament (e.g., Saul in 1 Samuel 10:10), the Spirit "remains" on Jesus.

This permanence highlights His unique role as the eternal Son of God and the one anointed to bring salvation.

The remaining presence of the Spirit signifies Jesus' full unity with the Father and Spirit, revealing the Trinity's work in the salvation plan.

*3) The Baptism of the Holy Spirit*

The Spirit descending on Jesus points to His role in baptizing believers with the Holy Spirit (John 1:33).

This foreshadows Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit empowers the church (Acts 2).

For Christians, this event reminds us of the transformative power of the Spirit, who indwells believers, guiding and equipping them for a life of holiness and mission.

*4) The Humility of the Son of Man*

The descending of the spirit takes place in the context of Baptism

Here Jesus, referred as the Son of Man,

Even though He was the Son of God, He humbles himself by submitting to baptism, a rite associated with repentance, though He was sinless.

This act of Jesus shows that he is one who with the people, to know their real conditions and to help them in whatever way possible

*5) Divine Approval and Love*

The descent of the dove is coupled with the voice of the Father declaring, *“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”* (Matthew 3:17).

This moment reveals the Father’s relationship with the Son and affirms Jesus’  divine identity and His  mission

*6) Confirming Jesus as Messiah*

The descent and abiding of the Spirit affirmed Jesus' identity as the Messiah.

In the Old Testament, the Spirit empowered leaders like kings, prophets, and judges temporarily.

In Jesus, the Spirit remains permanently, marking him as the fulfillment of messianic prophecies

*7) To Empower Jesus for His Mission*

The Spirit's presence equipped Jesus for his public ministry, enabling him to preach, heal, and proclaim the Kingdom of God.

This empowerment was not for personal glory but for the salvation of humanity.

The Importance of the Voice crying in the Desert

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season: 2nd January*

*Gospel : Jn 1:19-28*

*First Reading : 1 Jn 2:22-28*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4*

*The Importance of the Voice crying in the Desert*

*1) John's identity as Voice*

John the Baptist defines himself as a *voice*.

This reflects humility; he understands his role as a servant pointing to Christ.

Voice also draws attention to something and voice has its own significance

We, too, are called to be voices for God, to magnify His mission and not our selfish goals.

*2) Voice Towards Christ*

John’s voice directs attention to Christ, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

His mission is not self-centered but Christ-centered.

In our words and actions, we are called upon  to show Jesus through our voice and not to draw our attention to ourselves

*3) Voice in the Desert*

The *desert* can also symbolize isolation or unwillingness to hear the message yet John boldly proclaims his message.

This teaches us that truth and faithfulness to God must prevail even when the audience seems small or indifferent

Nothing should hinder us in proclaiming the message of Jesus, even when we fail miserably in our mission

*4) A Call to Prepare the Way*

The imagery of the *desert* signifies a barren, desolate place where paths must be straightened.

Spiritually, it represents the human heart that must be prepared to receive God through repentance and renewal.

In this sense, heart as a desert, has very important significance in our life

*5) The Urgency of the Message*

The expression *crying out* conveys urgency. When some one cries out for something, it simply means that there is some emergency

In this context John’s message was not passive cry but it was a passionate plea for repentance and readiness for the imminent arrival of Jesus.

As a followers of Christ, one cant not ignore this cry. We have to pay  attention to this cry, which will change our life

Am I ready to follow the Cry of the message of Jesus?

Great Lessons from Shepherds Life

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season: Mary Mother of God : Feast*

*Gospel : Lk 2:16-21*

*First Reading : Nm 6:22-27*

*Responsorial Psalm :Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8*

*Second Reading : Gal 4:4-7*

*Great Lessons from Shepherds Life*

*1) God's Choice of the Shepherds*

The first good news of the birth of Jesus was conveyed to the Shepherds

They were very simple people. Yet God chose the shepherds for this great event. The reasons may be following

Shepherds are always alert
Shepherds always protect their sheep
Shepherds are always with sheep
Shepherds consider sheep as their wealth

One should have a shepherds heart to become the sincere follower of Jesus the shepherd

*2) Belief in the Divine message*

When the shepherds saw the great and wonderful things, they simply believed about what was said by the angels

Immediately the shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had seen and heard, confirming the truth of the angel's message.

Their response is a model for us to believe in the mighty works of God

when we witness God's work in our lives, like shepherds we are called to share that joy and gratitude with others.

*3) Praise as a Natural Response to God's Work*

The shepherds returned to their everyday lives, but their encounter with Christ transformed them.

They glorified and praised God as they went back to their work.

This highlights that worship is not confined to specific moments but should permeate all aspects of life.

Encountering Christ changes not only how we worship but also how we live.

*4) God's Glory Revealed to the Humble*

The shepherds, who were among the lowliest in society, were the first to witness the angelic proclamation and see the Christ child.

This highlights God's preference for the humble and lowly, echoing themes throughout Scripture

It reminds us that God often reveals His glory not to the powerful but to those with open and humble hearts.

*5)  A Renewed Identity*

The shepherds returned to their fields and flocks, but they were no longer just *shepherds*

They became witnesses and worshipers.

This shift underscores how meeting Christ renews our sense of purpose and identity

*6) From Fear to Joy*

Initially, the shepherds were terrified when the angel appeared (Luke 2:9).

But their fear gave way to great joy as they heard the good news and met the Savior.

This mirrors the spiritual journey of many believers: God’s presence may initially confront and overwhelm us, but His grace brings peace and joy

*7) Living in the Light of Glory*

The shepherds didn’t remain at the manger. They carried the joy and wonder of their experience back into their world.

This teaches that our encounters with Christ are not meant to be confined to isolated moments; they are meant to shape our lives.

Like the shepherds, we are called to live in the light of Christ’s glory, letting it transform our work, relationships, and worship.

Jesus the Light, Who shines in the darkness

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season: 31st December : Tuesday*

*Gospel :Jn 1:1-18*

*First Reading : 1 Jn 2:18-21*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 96:1-2, 11-12, 13*

*Jesus the Light, Who shines in the darkness*

*1) The Light Shines in the Darkness*

The phrase “The light shines in the darkness” comes from John 1:5 and is rich in meaning.

First of all it refers to Jesus.  The aspect of light refers to the personality of Jesus, His mission and also His victory over the darkness of sin and death

Light is a beautiful concept,  which has multiple levels of meaning and spiritual significance to our life as well

*2) Christ as the Eternal Light*

Christ is described as the true light that gives life to all (John 1:4).

The light represents God’s truth, holiness, and presence in a world overshadowed by sin and ignorance.

Jesus, as the light, brings revelation and salvation to those living in spiritual darkness

*3) The Continuous burning of Light*

The phrase emphasizes that the light *shines* a continuous action, signifying that Christ’s presence and mission persist despite opposition.

Darkness, often symbolizing sin, evil, or death, cannot overcome the light.

This conveys the triumph of Christ over sin through His life, death, and resurrection

*4) Defeat of the Darkness by Light*

For believers, this verse offers immense comfort.

No matter how overwhelming the darkness of trials, sin, or suffering may seem, the light of Christ shines through, offering guidance, comfort, and redemption.

*The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?”* Psalm 27:1

It reminds us that darkness never defeat the Light of Christ

*5)  Mission to Reflect the Light*

As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His light in the world.

Jesus says *You are the light of the world*

If we fail to reflect the Light of Christ, our life has no mission and goal. Reflecting Jesus' light in the World is the primary mission of a followers of Christ

Living as Christ’s light involves acts of love, justice, and truth, dispelling darkness in our communities and drawing others to God’s grace.

*6) Christmas, the arrival of the Eternal Light*

This verse speaks very strongly during the Christmas season, when the birth of Christ is celebrated as the arrival of light into the world.

Christmas is celebrated as the festival of light and Jesus the Light of the World

It reminds us of the humble yet powerful beginning of salvation history, fulfilling prophecies like Isaiah 60:1, *Arise, shine, for your light has come!*

How about my life as the Light?

Do I shine in the darkness like Jesus?

What are the ways through which I shine in my life?

The Spirituality of prophetess Anna

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season: 30th December : Monday*

*Gospel : Lk 2:36-40*

*First Reading : 1 Jn 2:12-17*

*Responsorial Psalm : Ps 96:7-8a, 8b-9, 10*

*The Spirituality of prophetess Anna*

*1) Faithfulness in Adversity*

Anna had lost her husband. She was able to live her marrired life only for seven years

Despite this personal loss, she remained steadfast in her devotion to God.

She never complained about her challenges or any other adverse situations of life

Her example reflects the biblical principle of finding strength and purpose in God amidst adversity (Psalm 34:18).

*2) A Life of Worship*

Anna gave first place to God in her life

The Gospel says *She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying* (Luke 2:37).

Her life revolved around worship and intercession, showing her deep love for God and commitment to His will.

*3) Life filled with Hope*

Anna eagerly awaited the redemption of Israel.

Her encounter with the baby Jesus fulfilled her long-held hope, showing the reward of patient and expectant faith

Hope never disappointed her.

During this Jubilee Year 2025 we are called upon to live our life with Divine Hope which changes our life for better

*4) Prophetic Insight*

As a prophetess, Anna recognized Jesus as the Messiah.

This was possible because of  her deep rooted spiritual discernment, and her deep relationship with God.

Prayer and fasting was the foundation for the prophetic insight which helped her to recognize Jesus the Messiah

*5) A Witness to Others*

After encountering Jesus, Anna *gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem* (Luke 2:38).

Sharing of the Good News or the experience of Jesus was the spontaneous response of Prophetess Anna

This shows the primary mission of the followers of Jesus, to spread the Good News.

In this regard she a model for us in bearing the witness to Christ

*6) Perseverance in Devotion*

Anna was *very old* 84 years of age

Yet her age did not hinder  her from active service to God.

Her life is a mirror of  perseverance in faith irrespective of her age

Her life shows that one can persevere in faith at any moment of our life

Am I ready to follow the spirituality of Prophetess Anna?

Why boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem?

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season*

*Feast of the Holy Family*

*Gospel : Mt 2:13-15, 19-23 or Lk 2:41-52*

*First Reading : Sir 3:2-6, 12-14 or 1 Sm 1:20-22, 24-28*

*Responsorial Psalm :Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 or: Ps 84:2-3, 5-6, 9-10*

*Second Reading Col 3:12-21 or 3:12-17 or 1 Jn 3:1-2, 21-24*

*Why boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem?*

*1) The Importance of the Temple*

Jesus’ choice to stay in the temple highlights the  significance of the temole as the dwelling place of God’s presence.

From Jesus' work in the temple it is also clear that the temple is the center of spiritual learning.

His engagement with the teachers reflects His deep hunger for God’s Word. This invites us to examine our dedication to learn and to grow in the Scriptures.

*2) Symbol of Transition*

Jesus' choice to stay in the temple could be seen as the symbol of transition

Transition from his childhood to public ministry

Transition from private life to public life

Transition from the smaller family to a greater family. From biological family to divine higher family

Transition from learning from the home people to learned people

Transition to his His public ministry

His time in the temple could be seen as a foreshadowing of His later ministry, teaching in synagogues and proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

*3) Awareness of His Divine Mission*

Jesus' choice to remain temple also highlights the awareness of His unique identity and mission.

When Mary and Joseph find Him in the temple, He says, *Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?* (Luke 2:49).

This indicates His growing understanding of His relationship with God the Father and His role in fulfilling divine purposes.

*4) Preference for Spiritual Learning*

Jesus’ lingering in Jerusalem invites us to linger in God’s presence and deepen our understanding of Him.

The teachers in the temple were astonished by Jesus’ wisdom, even at a young age, which challenges us to grow spiritually, and to seek wisdom and insight irrespective of our age

*5) Revelation of Greater Truths*

At the age 12 people are able to reason out in a better way

Jesus' choice to remain in Jerusalem and all the things which followed because of this incident, in a way reveal the greater truths about Jesus' mission and personality

The Revelation of  His intimate relationship with the Father

Revelation of His extraordinary wisdom

Revelation of His courage to face and challenge the so called learned people

*6) A Lesson for His Parents*

Mary and Joseph experienced anxiety and confusion when they realized Jesus was missing.

They didn't fully understand His explanation his explanation of being in the temple either

So, this moment likely deepened their awareness of Jesus’ divine nature and mission, reminding them that He belonged to God first and foremost.

By staying in the temple, Jesus demonstrated the importance of prioritizing time in God’s presence. He was drawn to His “Father’s house” as a place of worship, learning, and communion with God.
