Why did Jesus send the disciples ahead of Him to Bethsaida?

GOSPEL THOUGHTS

*Christmas Season:   Wednesday after Epiphany*

*Gospel :  Mark 6:45-52*

*First Reading : 1 John 4:11-18*

*Responsorial Psalm : 72: 1-13*

*Why did Jesus send the disciples ahead of Him to Bethsaida?*

*1) Practical and historical reasons*

*A) To dismiss the crowd safely*

After the miracle, the crowd was excited and could easily turn chaotic or politically charged (John 6 tells us they wanted to make Him king).

In this Context Jesus sends the disciples away so:

They are not caught up in crowd expectations
He alone handles the crowd
The miracle does not turn into misunderstanding about His mission

*Lesson:* God sometimes removes us from situations that feel successful but could lead us away from His purpose.

*B) To create space for prayer*

Jesus goes up the mountain to pray. This shows:

Even after powerful ministry, Jesus prioritizes communion with the Father
Solitude is not weakness, but preparation

*Lesson* : Spiritual victories should lead us toward prayer, not away from it.

*2) Why “send them ahead” instead of going together?*

*A) To teach them through experience*

The disciples enter the boat by obedience, not by accident.

Yet obedience leads them into: Strong winds, Exhaustion, Fear

This is crucial: The storm was not punishment; it was training.

*Lesson*: Being in God’s will does not mean the absence of struggle.

*B) To expose the limits of their faith*

Mark later comments that the disciples were still confused because their hearts were hardened, even after the feeding miracle.

*The storm reveals*:
They saw the miracle but did not yet understand who Jesus truly is
They trusted His power with bread, but not yet with chaos and nature

*Lesson* : Faith grows when what we believe is tested by what we experience.

*3)  Why did Jesus come later, walking on the water?*

*A) To reveal His divine authority*

In the Old Testament, only God walks on the sea and rules the deep (Job 9:8; Psalm 77:19).

*Jesus walking on water shows*:
He is not just a teacher or miracle-worker
He has authority over creation itself

*Lesson*: The storm that overwhelms us is the surface Jesus walks upon.

*B) To show that He sees even when He seems absent*

Jesus was on the mountain, yet Mark says He saw them struggling.

*Lesson*: Jesus may feel distant, but He is never unaware. Delay is not neglect.

*4) Why Bethsaida specifically?*

Bethsaida was:
A familiar place for some disciples
A short journey (but became long because of resistance)

*This teaches*:
Sometimes God sends us to familiar destinations
Yet the journey becomes unexpectedly difficult

*Lesson*: The difficulty is not always about the destination, but about what God is forming in us on the way.

*5) Key spiritual reflections*

*A) Obedience does not eliminate storms*

The disciples obeyed Jesus exactly — and still faced hardship.
Following Jesus does not mean smooth sailing, but it does mean His presence in the storm.

*B) Jesus prays while we struggle*

While the disciples row, Jesus prays. This shows:
Their struggle is covered by His intercession
Heaven is active even when earth feels heavy

*C) Fear comes from misrecognizing Jesus*

They thought He was a ghost.
Sometimes fear grows not because Jesus is absent, but because we don’t recognize Him in unfamiliar forms.

*D) Jesus gets into the boat*

When Jesus enters: The wind dies down, Peace returns
*Lesson*: Peace is not the absence of storms, but the presence of Christ.

*Think about it*

*God bless you and your family. Praying for you and your dear ones*
